随着中国经济的快速发展和国际交往的日益广泛，世界各国对汉语学习的需求急剧增长。在借鉴其他国 家推广本民族语言经验的基础上，中国从 2004 年起开始在海外设立孔子学院。孔子学院是以教授汉语和传播中国文化为宗旨的非营利（non-profit）机构。到 2012 年年底，中国已经在全球 108 个国家和地区建立了大约 400 所孔子学院和 500 个孔子课堂。
